Burghfield and Mortimer Volunteer Bureau

What we need: Drivers

If you drive your own car and can spare a few hours per week, you could become a driver for the Bureau. Volunteer drivers use their own cars to collect passengers from their residences, take them to their destinations and take them home again after their appointment. They record the mileage of the trip and submit a claim to the Bureau; the present reimbursement rate is 40 pence per mile.* The most common destinations are Mortimer Surgery and the Royal Berkshire Hospital (RBH) in Reading. Some drivers are willing and able to help passengers with serious mobility problems, e.g. by using one of the wheelchairs at the hospital, taking a passenger's own wheelchair or the one owned by the Bureau, or perhaps just offering a supporting arm. Children, and adult passengers with mental impairments, are always accompanied by their own carers.

To volunteer, please ring the office on 0118 9831814 between 9.30 and 11.30 a.m., Monday to Friday.

A large majority of these journeys take place during weekdays, so this is an occupation mainly suited to active retired persons.

* This is the maximum that may be claimed free of tax unless the claimant is prepared to record total mileage and costs for the year and demonstrate to HM Customs and Revenue that the actual cost per mile was higher.
