The first three files are MP3 and are about 3 Mbytes long. On my 2 Mbit/s link they transfer in about 2 minutes. Playing time is just over three minutes for each. The default audio player in Firefox seems to have problems with these files, possibly to do with buffer sizes. I have changed my Firefox so that it uses Musicmatch Jukebox, which was supplied with my computer by Hewlett Packard, as its audio plugin. There may be security weaknesses if you use Windows Media Player in a non-Microsoft browser, so if you have problems hearing these files with Firefox, your easiest solution is to use Internet Explorer.
for three trumpets, three trombones and a tuba. The overall structure is typical of 16th C. Venetian contrapuntal brass music, but the material is nearer to the style of Scott Joplin.
for two flutes and piccolo two oboes and cor anglais, two clarinets and bass clarinet, two bassoons and double bassoon, three horns.
This is intended as a companion piece to the Mozart Gran Partita in Bb for 13 instruments. The style is that of a French organ piece, played at the end of a church service and of cheerful character.
The next is also MP3 but a bit longer at 5 Mbytes. It is the first of "Four Greek Cameos", one other written, two more planned.
The
following excerpts are MIDI files, which represent the sounds of the
works with variable success. In particular, since their origin is a
notation package rather than a sequencer, I have not discovered how
to correct the strange sounds that represent some of the percussion
instruments in the Sinfonietta.
Other
possible problems are the rate at which your access route will
deliver the MIDI sequence and the buffering of your browser and
play-back software. I have had the occasional glitch on a 500
kbit/second line played by Windows Media Player through Mozilla
Firefox. I recommend that you set your audio playback to low volume,
in case loud noises interrupt the music.
