Other music-making opportunities

Try searching on www.google.com for more information on groups which have no contact details here, or try sending e-mail to Patsy who may be able to put you in touch with members of the groups. The list is in random order. Details, of venue and times in particular, may be out of date, so don't just turn up without checking!

If you are looking for an orchestra or band to join and don't find anything appropriate here you could try looking at the UK Amateur Orchestras' Web site. It includes bands. I don't know of a choir equivalent (yet!).

Before telling you about other music-making groups I'd just like to give a brief mention to three useful Web sites that offer advice on musicians' physical problems and injuries. If you experience pain of any sort when practising or playing don't ignore it! Problems can be caused by your posture or by poorly set up instruments among other causes. Take a look at the Web sites of the Performing Arts Medicine Association (PAMA), , the British Association for Performing Arts Medicine (BAPAM) and the International Foundation for Performing Arts Medicine (IFPAM).

For players of stringed instruments who have reached about Grade 5 standard and have some experience of playing in conducted groups places are available immediately in The Saturday Morning Orchestra . More experienced violinists would be particularly welcome. There are currently a few vacancies for brass players. This is an old-established orchestra whose founder-conducter Raymond Jones bowed out in 2004 after 33 years with the orchestra. He was given a wonderful send-off at Ufton Court by past and present members.

The orchestra meets at The Beansheaf Community Centre, Charrington Road, Calcot (West of Reading) on Saturday mornings 10.30-12.45 and the conducting is currently shared by orchestra members Steve Wellman and John Tims. Send mail about recruitment to Steve Wellman . Send mail about other orchestra matters to David Wilcox or telephone him on 0118 971 4287. It's essentially a rehearsal orchestra, and doesn't give formal public concerts. Some of the more advanced players particularly welcome the opportunity to play quite challenging repertoire without the pressure of a formal concert. Spring term 2008 repertoire includes music by Beethoven, Dvorak, Elgar and Smetana's Vltava. The orchestra is currently in the process of selecting a new conductor (or perhaps conductors) so that Steve and John can return to being regular members of the first violin and horn sections respectively.
